What is it?
The a feeling of food getting stuck is a form of dysphagia in which the patient perceives that food they don't advance correctly after swallowing them. It can appear occasionally or recur over time.
This symptom usually indicates a Altered transit of food, whether due to structural issues or Oesophageal motility disorder, so it is important to study it.
What is the patient feeling
The patient usually notices that the Food gets stuck after swallowing, as if it tightness in the chest or throat, forcing them to drink fluids or wait for it to pass.
Unlike other forms of dysphagia, this is a very specific and localised feeling of blockage, which appears especially when eating solid food.
In some cases, it can generate Discomfort when eating or fear of it happening again, going so far as to change their eating habits.
What pathology may be related
- Oesophageal achalasia.
- Pharyngeal pouch.
- Diffuse oesophageal spasm.
- Esophagus (Jackhammer).
- Functional obstruction of the oesophagogastric junction.
- Oesophageal cancer.

- If the sensation recurs. It is not an isolated incident.
- If it gets worse with time. It’s getting harder and harder to swallow.
- If it happens frequently when eating solids. Especially with dry food.
- If there are associated symptoms. Weight loss, pain or choking.
