Members of GASTEADrs. Diego De Frutos, Santiago y Alberto Herreros de Tejada) have actively participated in a major multicentre clinical trial, recently published in Gastroenterology (Impact Factor 25.1 in 2024), a prestigious international benchmark journal that assesses the efficacy and safety of Endoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD) Transanal minimally invasive surgery (TAMIS) in the treatment of early rectal neoplasms.
The study, named DSETAMIS-2018, was carried out in three Spanish centres y represents one of the most robust comparisons to date between the two techniques. It included patients with early rectal lesions larger than 20 mm who were randomised to be treated by ESD or TAMIS, and they underwent a 12-month follow-up.
The study results confirm that the endoscopic technique (DSE) is, at least, as effective as transanal minimally invasive surgery (TAMIS) for successfully treating these rectal lesions.
